Google Summer of Code: paid open-source contributor

Newcomers to open source spend 12+ weeks writing code for a real open-source project, guided by its mentors. Many participating organizations build ML, data and AI tools. You pick a listed project, write a proposal, and are paid after passing the mid-term and final evaluations.

• Typical window: organizations announced in February; contributor applications open for about two weeks in March
• India stipends are lower than in the US because they are adjusted for purchasing power; see the official stipend table
