Ghent University: Postdoc (3 years): Simulation of Composite Hydrogen Tanks

Posted 23 Oct 2026

The Mechanics of Materials and Structures group (UGent-MMS) at Ghent University has a 3-year postdoc on finite element modelling and design of pressurised composite hydrogen tanks. The project is run with several leading automotive companies. The tank is studied under pressurisation, depletion and thermomechanical loads. It suits a PhD in computational mechanics of composites.

What you'll do

  • Build finite element models of pressurised composite hydrogen tanks
  • Design the tank for different operating conditions: pressurisation, depletion and thermomechanical loads
  • Work closely with the industrial partners in the project
  • Collaborate with the other doctoral and postdoctoral researchers working on composite hydrogen tanks

Who can apply

  • Only candidates with a PhD degree should apply
  • A strong interest in computational mechanics of composite materials
  • Enthusiasm for collaboration between industry and academia
  • A background in mechanical, civil or biomedical engineering or computational mechanics, with knowledge of mechanics of materials
  • Good written and spoken English; Dutch is not required

How to apply

Write a detailed CV in Dutch or English with personal details, education and thesis subject, transcripts of Bachelor and Master degrees, work experience, skills such as FE software and programming, and languages. Send it by email to Prof. Wim Van Paepegem (Wim.VanPaepegem@UGent.be).
