Posted 25 Oct 2026

AECOM's Water Team is hiring a Principal CFD Engineer to work on dams, spillways and other hydraulic structures. The work is for UK and international projects within the Reservoir Engineering practice. The role is hybrid, with a base at an Edinburgh, Belfast or Leeds hub office.

What you'll do

  • Lead end-to-end 3D CFD modelling for spillways, energy dissipation structures and intake and outlet works
  • Analyse turbulent and transient flows, energy losses, cavitation risk, air entrainment and water-hammer effects
  • Combine CFD with physical model results for calibration and validation, and turn the findings into design improvements
  • Produce technical reports, visualisations and client presentations
  • Act as the technical authority for hydraulic CFD in the dams and reservoirs team and mentor junior modellers
  • Help with scoping, proposals and cost estimates, and make occasional site visits

Who can apply

  • A degree in civil, hydraulic, mechanical engineering or a related field
  • Chartered engineer status, or working towards it
  • Significant experience applying CFD to hydraulic structures such as dams, spillways, intakes and outlet works
  • Proficiency in Flow3D, OpenFOAM, ANSYS Fluent or similar, plus tools such as HEC-RAS, ICEM CFD, Paraview, Rhino or Grasshopper
  • Skill in combining numerical and physical modelling, and in client-facing communication
  • Proven ability to mentor others and enforce quality assurance
