Los Alamos National Laboratory: Postdoc: Dynamic Systems, Optimization, Energy Networks
This is a postdoc in the Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics Group (T-5) of the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The work develops algorithms for modelling, inference, optimization, optimal control and economic analysis of energy networks, focusing on electric power and natural gas transmission and distribution. The initial appointment is two years, with a possible third-year extension depending on performance and funding. It suits a recent PhD in applied mathematics, engineering or computer science.
What you'll do
- Work with mentors and collaborators to develop new algorithms for surrogate modelling, inference and parameter estimation for energy networks
- Build numerical methods using spectral approximation, interior point optimization and numerical linear algebra
- Use high-performance computing on novel architectures and agentic AI systems where relevant
- Publish in scientific journals and present the work
Who can apply
- A PhD in applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, computational science or a closely related field, completed within the past five years or soon to be completed
- Expertise in dynamical systems, control theory, optimization and network science
- Proficiency in one or more of MATLAB, Python, Julia, Rust or C/C++
- A demonstrated ability to publish in scientific journals and to communicate well in writing and speech
- Preferred: experience with optimization in function space, scientific computing, software development with version control, and quantitative economics
- Citizens of China, Iran, North Korea and Russia who are not Lawful Permanent Residents cannot access the laboratory facilities, so they are not eligible
